Checking In with the Town Hall
Congratulations! You have signed your rental contract, or at least secured a place temporarily for yourself! The next step is to register your address with the local authorities.
It is an analogue process. So, you actually have to go to the local town hall (Rathaus), and the relevant office for this process is called Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt. You should register with the relevant authority as soon as possible—ideally right after you arrive, and no later than two weeks—to let them know you’re now living here. Otherwise, you could face a fine.
As soon as you have registered, you will get a tax ID (Steuer-ID); if not, you will receive it by post from the tax authorities (Finanzamt), usually within four to six weeks. In urgent cases, you can go to the town hall after one week and ask for your tax ID in person (costs: €7). You need to give your tax ID to the CISPA Human Resources Department as it is the basis for your tax class.
At the end of your stay, you must deregister (Abmeldung) if you are leaving Germany. You can do this at the earliest one week before your departure.
